Reading can be fun and rewarding.

Welcome to our Read with Grandma Phonics Program.

If your child is falling behind in reading, you are not alone, and it is not your fault. Many schools rely on classroom methods that leave struggling readers guessing at words rather than actually learning to decode them.

Our program provides an immediate, stress-free alternative. We pair your child with a patient, dedicated "Grandma Assistant" for live, 1-on-1 virtual sessions. Using the legendary "I See Sam" book series, we take the pressure off your shoulders. Your child does the reading, Grandma provides gentle, real-time help, and you get a much-needed 25-minute break knowing your child is finally getting reading instruction that actually works.

Why Phonics? A Proven Reading Technology

Many modern school curriculums encourage kids to look at the pictures and "guess" the word. This backfires completely by the 3rd grade when the pictures disappear and the words get harder.

  • It’s Brain Science, Not a Trend: Phonics is a proven, systematic method that teaches children exactly how letters map to sounds. It teaches them to break down and read any word logically, eliminating guessing entirely.

  • Builds Real Confidence: When a child learns the rules of phonics, reading stops feeling like a frustrating guessing game. They realize they have the tools to figure out words on their own, which completely changes their attitude toward books.

The Ultimate Goal: Every Child a Proficient Reader

The objective here is straightforward: to get your child to be a fluent, independent, and proficient reader. We aren't trying to rush them through worksheets or force memorization. We are building the solid, foundational mechanics your child needs so that reading becomes automatic, smooth, and genuinely enjoyable.

FAQs

How long are the Phonics sessions?

All sessions are 25 minutes long. This is the sweetspot for Grandmas and young children, long enough for measurable impact, but short enough for before the energy drops. For the Phonics sessions, we recommend 2 sessions a week.

Why Phonics?

Think of Phonics like a code-breaker tool for your child’s brain. Many modern classrooms methods teach kids to memorize entire words or look at a picture and guess. This method has lead to catastrophic losses in reading comprehension.

Phonics teaches children the rules of how letters map to sounds. By learning to break words down into logical sounds, your child gains a tool that works for any book, eliminating guessing entirely and replacing it with genuine comprehension.

How soon will I see progress?

You will see comprehension breakthroughs in the very first session! Because the “I See Sam” books are so carefully designed, Book 1 only uses three simple sounds. Grandma will practice those exact sounds with your child before opening the book.

Weeks 1-2: the daily arguments about reading disappear. Your child feels the immediate ‘win’ of finishing real books.

Month 1: You’ll notice your child stopping themselves from guessing. Instead of looking at a picture and blurting out a random word, they will start using their new tools to sound words out all by themselves.

Months 2-3: Reading transitions from a slow, bumpy struggle into a much smoother natural flow as their decoding skills become automatic.

How do I sign up?

You can book a meet-and-greet session that goes over the program, talks about the sessions, and introduces the I See Sam books.

Once the meet-and-greet has been done, you can choose to book a single session, a once-a-week package, or a twice-a-week package.

One 25 minute session: $25
1 Month of 1x a week: $80
1 Month of 2x a week: $150

What if it doesn’t work?

If your child puts in the work and you do not see any progress after the first four sessions, we will completely refund your month’s package.

But we are confident in this reading method. And if they put the time in with Grandma, your child will see results.

What happens after the basics?

Once the work has been done to progress through the I See Sam books, your child will then be ready for standard early-chapter books, school library books, and stories on their own.

Your child can continue to Read With Grandma as they gather more and more confidence in their reading comprehension.

Our Phonics program: Reading with Grandma

You shouldn't have to fight your child to practice reading at the end of a long workday. Let us handle it.

  • The Child Takes the Lead: In these sessions, Grandma doesn't read to your child. Your child sits in the driver’s seat and reads the "I See Sam" book out loud via screen-share.

  • Grandma is the Assistant: Grandma is there purely to support your child's reading progress. If your child gets stuck on a word, Grandma doesn't just blurt out the answer. She steps in with patient, encouraging prompts to help them sound it out safely: "Great try! Let's stretch out that first sound together..."

  • A Pressure-Free Zone: Kids who are struggling at school are often terrified of making mistakes in front of their peers or frustrated parents. Grandma provides a warm, judgment-free space where making a mistake is just part of the game, letting your child relax and actually learn.

Scientific evidence confirms that reading to children significantly enhances reading skills through biological, linguistic, and long-term academic mechanisms. MRI studies show that regular reading increases brain activity in regions responsible for narrative comprehension and visual imagery, physically altering brain structure to support literacy.

Longitudinal research indicates that parent-child book reading at ages 1–2 predicts stronger reading, spelling, and grammar skills in grades 3 and 5, even when controlling for socioeconomic status. Language exposure data reveals that children read to daily hear up to 290,000 more words by kindergarten than those who are not, directly expanding the vocabulary necessary for decoding and comprehension.
